Structural Strengthening

We develop specialist jacking and temporary load-transfer solutions to enable the controlled lifting, realignment, repair or replacement of structural elements. Detailed engineering and sequencing ensure loads are safely managed throughout the works.
PTSI – Post-Tensioning Structural Investigation
Our Post-Tensioning Structural Investigation (PTSI) services provide specialist assessment of existing post-tensioned structures to establish their condition, integrity and capacity. We investigate PT systems to identify potential defects or deterioration and provide engineering-led recommendations for repair, strengthening or remediation, helping clients make informed decisions while maximising the safe life of the existing structure.
Case Study : Specialist Jacking at Dublin Airport
With issues at the Dublin Airport Authority water reservoir, John Paul Construction had to underpin the structure and jack the roof of the building.
ClearTech provided an alternative design for the roof jacking using a ten point lifting fully computerised monitoring system. The roof was jacked to 15mm and was then packed and shimmed into permanent position. The jacks were then lowered and the temporary works removed. The whole jacking process was carried out under strict specification and operating conditions as set out by the authority.
ClearTech provided a well thought-out and well engineered solution that was cost effective and was completed on time and within the allocated budget.
Case Study : Carbon Fibre Strengthening Solution
ClearTech developed a carbon fibre strengthening solution for an existing reinforced concrete structure where additional structural capacity was required without significant alteration to the existing building.
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) was used to strengthen targeted structural elements, providing a lightweight, high-strength solution with minimal impact on headroom, finishes and surrounding construction.
The approach allowed the existing structure to be retained and upgraded while minimising disruption, programme and additional structural weight, providing an efficient alternative to more extensive traditional strengthening or replacement works.
Case Study : Tank Repair, Melton Mowbray, England
Background:
ClearTech was engaged to develop a structural repair solution for three large tanks at an agricultural facility in Melton Mowbray, England. Following installation, cracking and water leakage had developed within the tank walls, requiring an effective remediation strategy that would allow the existing structures to remain in place.
Challenge:
The key challenge was to develop a robust repair solution that would address the existing cracking and leakage while providing sufficient circumferential, or hoop, compression to improve the structural performance and integrity of the tanks. ClearTech investigated the use of post-tensioning (PT) as a means of actively compressing the tank walls, controlling the existing cracking and providing the required hoop stress.
Solution:
By applying post-tensioning technology to an existing structure, ClearTech developed practical remediation options designed to:
- retain and strengthen the existing tank structures;
- introduce controlled hoop compression;
- address cracking and leakage;
- minimise demolition and reconstruction;
- reduce disruption to the operational facility; and
- provide a durable, engineered solution for the tanks' continued use.
Outcome:
The project demonstrates how specialist structural engineering expertise can be applied to the repair and strengthening of existing concrete structures, providing an efficient and cost-effective alternative to extensive demolition and replacement.
